Mayor calls for more water restrictions

Monday, February 09, 2009

L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa calls for more water restrictions on Monday.

The mayor is asking to restrict outdoor irrigation to two days a week, on Mondays and Thursdays only. This will fall under his 20-year water strategy, which is in response to the water shortage.

Villaraigosa proposed that the Department of Water and Power doubles its number of water conservation teams and to add enforcement hours.

Statewide reservoir levels are at a third of their capacity, the lowest since the 1976-78 drought. Villaraigosa says California will face significant water shortages this year, plus court-imposed limits on imported water.

The DWP board will vote on his proposals later this month.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
