'Get the Job' pt. 1: One stop center

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Our first stop is to show you a little-known secret where job seekers can get everything they need to find a job. From fax machines and computers to workshops on resumes and interviewing, and it doesn't cost you a dime.

When you see a Goodwill sign what do you think of? Chances are it's donations and thrift stores. But did you know the Goodwill Industries in Los Angeles is one of the best places for people to begin their search for work? That's because it's also a one-stop job center, one of many such resource centers in and around Southern California.

"We assist individuals who are looking for employment or training. We provide the resources here for them to search for employment," said Anna Zakarian, Goodwill Job Center.

And those resources include computers with Internet access, fax machine, copier, telephones, even a variety of clothes a job seeker can have to wear to a job interview. And the best part is it's all free.

Annette Scott is a college graduate and is a certified drug and alcohol counselor, but she's now looking for work and in this economy it has been tough.

"I'm just going to keep going full speed ahead. They told me that it is a full-time job looking for a full-time job, so that's what I'm doing," said Scott.

"Fortunately, because we do have good relationships with employers we do refer our clients out to employers who do hire them, as well as have onsite recruitments, and clients do get hired on the spot," said Zakarian.

So a one-stop job center can make a big difference. There are more than 50 of them in Southern California and besides computers, faxes and job postings, most of them offer classes in everything from language skills to workshops teaching interview skills to resume writing to finding a job by computer. All that and the best-kept secret is, it's all free.

"I was just elated over the fact that it is free. You can do everything for free," said Scott.
