Where the jobs are: New York Life

Thursday, April 09, 2009

ABC7 is on your side helping you make it through this recession by showing you "Where the Jobs Are."

Large insurance companies and other financial institutions have recently been in the news for mostly negative reasons. However, one insurance company has very good news to report: job openings.

After the fallout of insurance giant AIG, the collapse of brokerage house Bear Stearns and the bankruptcy of investment bank Lehman Brothers, you might not think that there are many jobs in insurance or financial services.

However, here in Southern California, managing partner David Mussehl says New York Life is looking for people.

"We plan to hire 50 people in our operation here in Irvine, California. But there are other offices run by my counterparts all over Southern California," said Mussehl. "And I would imagine between all of our offices we're looking to hire about 300-plus people."

The beauty of working for a company like New York Life is the potential to make plenty of money and earn good benefits -- even while you're in training.

"We have a training allowance subsidy that we pay that is $36,000 in your first year," said Mussehl. "We also pay commissions, we pay renewals, we pay an expense allowance. The average compensation is very good in our business."

Mussehl also gave Eyewitness News the rundown on the qualifications you need to work at New York Life.

"We certainly prefer people with college degrees. We have people from all kinds of backgrounds," said Mussehl. "We hire people right out of school with a finance degree. And we hire a lot of second career people that are tired of being downsized."
