Judge says he won't dismiss Toyota lawsuits

Friday, November 19, 2010

A federal judge in Southern California said he will deny a motion to throw out hundreds of lawsuits filed against Toyota because of sudden acceleration defects in its cars.

Toyota had asked the judge to dismiss many of the lawsuits, arguing the plaintiffs can't prove a design defect caused the problem.

The company recalled millions of vehicles because of sudden acceleration.

Attorneys for the plaintiffs said Toyota bought back the cars from drivers who reported acceleration issues, then had them sign confidentiality agreements. Toyota denied those allegations.

The judge is expected to issue a final ruling within a week.
