EL MONTE, Calif. (KABC) -- A Sears store in El Monte falls victim to a new company restructuring plan: The store is one of dozens around the country that will be closed in an effort to save money.
Loyal customers have been shopping at the Sears Essentials store in El Monte for years, but now its days are numbered. Pegged as an underperforming location, the former Kmart will be closing.
The 125-year-old retailer Sears says the El Monte location is among 79 Sears and Kmart stores that will shut down nationwide because of lackluster holiday sales.
And that's just the first wave. Sears plans to close as many as 120 stores.
Sears has been struggling with falling sales and aging locations as rival chains have lured more customers by turning into one-stop shopping destinations.
