Wilshire Grand in downtown LA holds liquidation sale

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A massive liquidation sale is under way at the iconic Wilshire Grand Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. The hotel is set to be demolished this summer, so everything must go, from furniture to kitchen sinks to pianos.

After 60 years of business, the hotel closed in December. But it reopened its doors on Thursday so that the public can stroll through the lobby one last time, and perhaps, pick up some souvenirs.

Hundreds of people filed into the 16-floor, 1,100-room hotel, located on the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and South Figueroa Street.

Admission is $5, and sale items run from baby grand pianos at $4,500 each to toilet roll dispensers priced to sell at $2.

Everything is sold "as is," and a 13-percent buyers premium is added to an 8.75 percent sales tax. And most items must be removed within two days of purchase, so for those buying big items, come with a plan.

The liquidation sale will continue seven days a week until June or until everything is sold. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The hotel is owned by Hanjin International, a subsidiary of Korean Airlines.
