Grocery store chain Ralphs has agreed to pay $1.1 million in penalties and restitution after an investigation showed it was overcharging customers in the Los Angeles area.

City investigators say Ralphs failed to subtract the weight of packaging on some prepackaged and weighed food products three years ago. They claimed that effectively short-weighted the item.

A spokesperson for Ralphs said the violations that led to the investigation were unintentional, and that there's nothing misleading about their pricing. In a statement, the company said any "inadvertent discrepancies" were corrected immediately.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
