LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Chevrolet's Corvette is an iconic American sports car, and you know one when you see one. But the newest model has heads turning. That's because the Vette got a major makeover.
A redesign of any car is a pretty big deal for any car company. But a redesign of a car like the Corvette is rather monumental.
Introducing the all-new seventh generation Chevrolet Corvette, which also brings back the name "Stingray."
The two-seater, dubbed "America's Sports Car," is now better, lighter and faster than any Corvette over the years.
Starting way back in 1953, the Corvette has been a halo car for Chevrolet. With this new example headed to select Chevy dealers, it's sure to continue that halo effect.
"They finally got it right," said veteran Corvette authority Dick Guldstrand. "I am so proud of those guys, I cannot tell you how proud I am. They got it right."
Guldstrand should know, as his nickname is "Mister Corvette." He raced them back in the day, and has been tinkering with them ever since. If anyone's seen the Vette evolve over the years, it's him.
So what does this Corvette expert like about the new Stingray?
"Number one: the 460 horsepower standard. The handling, driving. I mean, it's magnificent," said Guldstrand.
The late 1970s were dark days for all kinds of cars, especially a sports car like the Corvette. And there were executives at General Motors who didn't feel it should continue on even into the 1980s, let alone 2014.
But a dedicated team of engineers always persevered through the years, and moved the car forward to today.
This new example is truly now world-class in power, refinement and build quality. And get this: Its fuel economy estimates are 17 city and 29 highway. We've come a long way since the '70s.
OK, just one more question for Mister Corvette: Are you going to get one?
"Of course!" Guldstrand said.
A ringing endorsement if ever there was one.
