July 5, 2007 (KABC-TV) (KABC) -- Getting a great rate on a car rental can take some work, according to 'Consumer Reports.' That's despite the fact there's no shortage of car rental companies.
"For one thing, the rates can change all the time. For another, taxes and fees can add up to 30 percent to your bill," Greg Daugherty, of 'Consumer Reports,' said.
Some agencies have tightened the return window and only allow a 30-minute grace period. Arrive later than that, and you're charged an extra day.
Daugherty says one way to get a good rate is to avoid the big-name companies.
Two Web sites, carrentals.com and carrentalexpress, can make it easy to find smaller rental agencies where you're headed.
While renting a car at an airport is convenient, going elsewhere can be cheaper. 'Consumer Reports' says check with your hotel to see if there's an agency nearby.
There's other ways you can save.
"Never be afraid to ask for a discount. Car rental agencies often have special deals for members of AAA, AARP, and other organizations," Daugherty said.
Finally, "Consumer Reports" says book the smallest car you can tolerate. Odds are you'll get a free upgrade to a bigger one because that's what most rental agencies have in stock.
Don't forget, before you leave a rental agency, inspect the rental car with an agent for any nicks or dents. That way you won't be charged for them upon your return.
And whatever you do, gas up before you take the car back, or you can expect to pay two to three times the going rate.
