Oct. 2, 2007 (KABC-TV) (KABC) -- By now, you've probably heard of Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS). Maybe you've even wondered if you have it. These days, two pharmaceutical companies are heavily advertising prescription drugs to treat it. Are these new products fact or fiction?
RLS might be connected to everything from low iron in the blood to what you drink and eat. But the ads promoting a prescription drug don't mention that.
REQUIP promises relief for something you probably weren't aware of until recently -- RLS. Now there are also ads for a second medication -- Miraplex.
Consumer Reports' Nancy Metcalf says these ad campaigns are just the latest example of how advertising can prompt people to ask their doctor for drugs they may not need.
"This is a condition that affects -- at most -- three percent of adults," said Metcalf. "The commercials elevate it to something that seems much bigger."
Dr. Nicholas Rummo treats people with sleep disorders. He says since the commercials started running, more people have come to him complaining of restless legs. But not all of them need a prescription.
"Many people have leg movements and leg issues that they may be a bit aware of, but they're really sleeping pretty well, and they don't really need a medication," said Dr. Rummo.
Interestingly, the commercials don't mention possible causes of restless legs, which include iron deficiency, caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, cold remedies, and even pregnancy.
But by law, commercials are required to mention potential side effects -- and the list is extensive.
"Both ads point out they can increase gambling, sexual, and other urges," said Metcalf.
Rather than asking your doctor to prescribe a drug, Consumer Reports says to try a number of things first: cutting back on alcohol, limiting caffeine, asking your doctor if you need an iron supplement, and getting regular exercise. Those could be your key to a good night's sleep.
