Toyota recalls Prius due to steering issue

Wednesday, June 01, 2011

Toyota announced a recall involving approximately 52,000 Prius vehicles, model years 2001 to 2003, sold in the U.S.

Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday it's voluntarily recalling the cars to replace the electric-power steering pinion shaft attachment nuts, which may become loose.

Over time, drivers will notice significant increased steering effort when making a left turn, the automaker said.

Toyota announced its dealers will install improved nuts that secure the pinion shaft at no charge to the vehicle owner. The repair will take approximately four hours depending upon the dealer's work schedule.

Owners will receive notification letters in early July.
