LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The Hartz Mountain Corporation is voluntarily recalling its Hartz Chicken Chews and Hartz Oinkies Pig Skin Twists with Chicken for dogs.
The recall is due to trace amounts of unapproved antibiotic residue found in samples of the two products. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says two-thirds of the tested products did not contain any of the residue, but the treats were recalled out of caution.
The antibiotics found on some of treats are approved for use in poultry in China but are not among those approved in the U.S. The trace amounts of antibiotic residue do not pose a health risk to pets at the levels detected, and it's highly unlikely that the antibiotics are related to reports of illnesses the agency has received related to jerky pet treats in the past.
