LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- During a recent radio interview to promote his new album, Tony Bennett avoided questions about his personal life, but openly expressed his opinions about the U.S. Military and the Sept. 11 attacks.
The 85-year-old Grammy-winning singer and war veteran disagreed with radio host Howard Stern's premise that the 9/11 terrorist attacks led to U.S. involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"They flew the plane in, but we caused it," Bennett said. "We were bombing them and they told us to stop."
Bennett said he's anti-war and that "it's the lowest form of human behavior."
The singer, who has sold over 50 million albums over the years, served in World War II. He said his experiences as a teenager in combat changed his position on war forever.
Bennett also recalled a 2005 encounter he had with President George W. Bush, in which Bush reportedly told him that he "made a mistake" about the Iraq War.
