Whitney Houston laid to rest at NJ cemetery

NEWARK, N.J. (KABC) -- Whitney Houston was laid to rest at her final resting place during a private Sunday ceremony in New Jersey.

Her casket was loaded into a hearse in Newark and escorted to a cemetery in Westfield 20 miles away, where her father was interred in 2003.

Dozens of her fans lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the motorcade going by. Fans also gathered near the funeral home, and some even slowly ran alongside the hearse as it began the journey to Houston's gravesite. Several yelled out "We love you, Whitney" as the hearse, which had a black and white headshot of the star in a window, slowly drove away.

Saturday, there was a funeral service for the singer at her childhood church. The invitation-only ceremony featured a tribute by some of the biggest names in music, including Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys.

"The Bodyguard" co-star Kevin Costner and music mogul Clive Davis were among those who spoke.

Houston died last Saturday in her hotel room at the Beverly Hilton hotel on the eve of the Grammys at the age of 48. A cause of death has yet to be determined pending toxicology reports which could take weeks.

Her death marked the end of a life that was marked by stunning career achievements and a public battle with drugs.
