March 13, 2006 (KABC) -- Taking the blood thinner Plavix with aspirin to prevent a heart attack could be dangerous.
Doctors have prescribed Plavix and aspirin for heart attack patients because it actually cuts the risk of having a second heart attack and death. Doctors thought the same combination would actually prevent a heart attack, but a new study shows that's not the case.
In fact researchers found Plavix and aspirin nearly doubled the risk of death, heart attack and stroke for patients with no clogged arteries, but with high blood pressure and cholesterol.
