Too much sugar free gum linked to diarrhea

Friday, January 11, 2008

A new study shows that too much sugar free gum is not good for you.

A sweetener widely used in sugar free gum has been linked to intestinal problems. Researchers say consuming too much of the sweetener Sorbitol may cause chronic diarrhea and unintended weight loss.

Patients in the study chewed 15 to 20 sticks of sugar-free gum a day. But when they stopped, they regained normal bowel function.

Scientists say Sorbitol is known to have laxative properties.
