NORTHERN CALIFORNIA (KABC) (KABC) -- Researchers in Northern California will conduct a yearlong study on a bizarre skin condition called Morgellons.
Patients with the condition often complain about skin rashes, mysterious threads popping out of their skin, and a sensation that tiny bugs are crawling over their body. Some experts believe Morgellons is psychiatric in nature, but hundreds of patients have claimed it's a physical illness.
"They're fibers, I believe from the environment, not from inside the skin," said Dr. Vincent Deleo of the St. Lukes-Roosevelt Medical Center.
The U.S. Center for Disease Control is paying Kaiser Permanente to test and interview patients suffering from Morgellons symptoms.
