Study: Eating red meat increase risk of developing diabetes
LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Almost 26 million Americans have diabetes, with the overwhelming majority suffering from Type 2 diabetes. Now research shows that eating red meat greatly increases the risk of developing the disease.
Harvard scientists found that processed meat like a hamburger or hot dog or 2 slices of bacon a day increased the risk of developing the disease by 51 percent.
Researchers aren't exactly sure what the connection is but think that cells in the pancreas may get damaged by substances found in red meat.
The risk of diabetes goes down by substituting other protein sources like nuts, low fat dairy and whole grains.
