Study: Stents could be harmful

Wednesday, January 14, 2009

If you've got a narrowed artery, chances are you may need an angioplasty, with a stent to keep your blood vessels open.

But a new study suggests in most cases stents are not only unnecessary, but possibly harmful.

Researchers say doctors could do fewer angioplasties if they did a simple blood flow test first.

It measures how well blood is getting to the heart despite the narrowing.

In the study, researchers found fewer patients required stents which resulted in fewer deaths, heart attacks and repeat procedures.
