'Raymond's' Doris Roberts going strong

Wednesday, July 29, 2009

Doris Roberts is a Hollywood survivor. She's been working her acting magic now for decades. Now, the "Everybody Loves Raymond" star is trying something different as one of the stars of the family film, "Aliens in the Attic."

"I don't give in, I don't give up, I don't settle, I don't take no for an answer," said Doris. "That's my motto."

It's a motto that's served actress Doris well. The 78-year-old actress has been working for close to 60 years. Retire? Forget it! She says working is what keeps her young.

Her latest film is the family-friendly "Aliens in the Attic."

"I love that I was able to do this movie for several reasons: to get a job, that's always nice. To do something I had never done, to be challenged," said Doris. "But I wanted to prove to the world, stop this nonsense about ageism. What are we talking about? I was able to do that as well as anybody in their 20s."

One thing Doris was asked to do in this film is a very physical scene, and she tackled it with gusto. She plays a tough grandma who'll stop at nothing to protect her grandkids from the aliens who've moved into their vacation home.

"I just had a great time," said Doris. "I approached it like I was a kid. I didn't question, I just said, 'Yeah, that's who I am. When I said, 'Game on,' I meant. 'game on.'"

Roberts is at the top of her game, and one thing she enjoys is working with and teaching, young actors.

Her "Aliens" crew was more than happy to learn from her.

"Live life to the fullest, because she does," said co-star Ashley Tisdale.

"Yeah, I learned a lot just watching her work," said co-star Robert Hoffman. "And we were all out there for so long. I got to watch her coach some people. It was cool."

"Doris was awesome," said co-star Carter Jenkins. "She's been around forever."

"She's not going to like to hear that," points out co-star Kevin Nealon.

"I mean, she's a vet, she's a veteran," said Carter. "She offered a lot of advice to me and the other actors. She's a pro."

"That might cover it," Kevin quipped.

"Aliens in the Attic" opens Friday.

There's more of Doris still to come. She has two other films set for release later this year -- one with Ernest Borgnine; the other opposite Andy Griffith.
