Christian Bale: There's realism in 'The Dark Knight Rises'

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Gotham City invaded New York City Monday night for the premiere of the latest "Batman" movie.

The stars of "The Dark Knight Rises" hit the red carpet with plenty of fans on hand to catch a glimpse of all the action.

Tom Hardy is the villain, Anne Hathaway is Catwoman and Christian Bale is back as Batman. Bale is a versatile star who will take on almost any challenge.

"We concluded that I'm afraid of romantic comedies," Bale said. Other than that, Bale is relatively fearless on film.

"There's realism to this superhero movie that I've never seen in a superhero movie before. I think that there was a realism when Bob Kane first created Batman. I think it went off in a different direction, and I think that Chris [Nolan] has just returned to that original concept and that brings out the reality," said Bale. There is something quite uncanny that happened during 'The Dark Knight Rises' and with it, I think you'll see that there's a correlation in, you know, the Occupy Wall Street Movement."

That "correlation" was a coincidence since the script by director and screenplay co-writer Christopher Nolan was done long before the Occupy Movement ever happened. The storyline became topical.

"He manages to take a superhero, but actually make it mean something to our time right now," said Bale.

But it is still a superhero movie, so there is plenty of spectacle, too. Making this movie was not easy, but Bale said it was well worth all the effort.

"They are long shoots, and it's not comfortable. But hey, look, boo hoo. I mean, really, who cares? I'm getting to play Batman," said Bale.

"The Dark Knight Rises" flies into theaters on Friday.
