Jimmy Kimmel aims for 'not horrible' Emmys

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Inside the Nokia Theatre, the seating chart is being finessed and the lights and the staging are all being readied for Sunday's all-star crowd at the Emmys.

Everyone will be eager to hear who wins what, and also eager to be entertained by this year's host with the most, Jimmy Kimmel.

"Jimmy I think is going to be unpredictable," said Don Mischer, executive producer of the Emmys. "He's going to be a little edgy, and I think he's going to give us a fresh point of view. He's stepping up to the plate with a lot of confidence so I'm feeling pretty good."

The challenge has Kimmel leaving the comfort of late night behind -- for a few hours, anyway.

Hosting the Emmys is a lot of work, honoring an industry Kimmel loves.

"It seems like I watch every one of the shows that has been nominated. This has been a real eye-opener for me when people say, 'What shows do you watch?' Then I'll rattle off a list of 30 shows," Kimmel said. "But I do watch almost all the shows, except for those BBC mini-series and documentaries. Nobody watches that nonsense."

It's Kimmel's first time hosting the Emmys, but he has hosted many other events, including the American Music Awards. And it was there he learned a valuable lesson.

"I went to Snoop Dogg, which was a mistake," Kimmel said. "And I said, 'I need you to help me with something, I need you to be a part of this, but all I need you to do is just be in your seat during the opening monologue.' He said, 'No problem my nephew, I'll be there.' And of course he wasn't there. It was just a puff of smoke and my joke went up in flames along with him."

Sunday night inside the Nokia Theatre, Emmys will be won and a host -- who has several comedy secrets up his sleeve -- will hope it's a winning night for him, too.

"I'm very pessimistic by nature," Kimmel said. "But I think that after it's all done on Sunday night, it will have gone, hopefully, not horrible."

You can catch all of the Emmys excitement on ABC7 starting at 2 p.m. with On The Red Carpet at The Emmys featuring hosts George Pennacchio, Rachel Smith, Joey Fatone and Roshumba Williams. At 4 p.m. the stars come out for Emmys Red Carpet Live, and the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards begins at 5 p.m.
