Tough guy Robert Patrick stars in ABC series 'Last Resort'

Thursday, October 18, 2012

Robert Patrick knows his way around strong roles. He first made an impact as the villain in "Terminator 2." And for more than 20 years now, he's continued to show strength in his characters. Robert's latest tough guy is a veteran Navy officer on the new ABC military drama series "Last Resort."

"Last Resort" deals with a submarine crew defying orders to fire nuclear weapons, and the consequences of that decision. The show's been on a few weeks now and Robert says it's one of his favorite roles, ever.

"I believe that early on, people perceived me as the bad guy," said Robert. "But I think he's the one who's got the strongest conviction of what's right and what's wrong."

Is it too complicated for people to pick up right now?

"No," said Robert. "And now we're at the point in the story where we are going to see who the bad guys are, who initiated orders that put these people in the situation they're in and, now, how they're dealing with what's happened to them.

What's happening to Robert these days is work! He's in the upcoming Billy Bob Thornton film "Jayne Mansfield's Car." You'll see him playing Amanda Seyfried's father in "Lovelace," the life story of porn star Linda Lovelace. He's also in the ensemble cast of "Gangster Squad." And he's out to catch criminal Melissa McCarthy in the comedy "Identity Thief."

"She's hysterical," said Robert. "I got takes with her where I couldn't keep it together. She's just -- I love her, man."

Robert also loves his commitment to the annual Love Ride, which happens this Sunday. The motorcycle charity has raised more than $24 million over the years for all sorts of good causes.

"This year, in particular, we're raising money for the U.S.O.," said Robert. "I've done several trips with the U.S.O. to Baghdad and Afghanistan. I believe in our veterans. I believe in what the U.S.O. does as far as bringing Main Street to the troops. To be able to give something to the men and women of the armed forces is real important to me."

Robert is the honorary grand marshal of this year's Love Ride.
