Actor Leaves Home Because of Wildfire

Thursday, September 29, 2005

Actor-comedian Shelley Berman of HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" reports he and his neighbors in Bell Canyon were told to evacuate yesterday evening.

Berman says he had finished a nice dinner and saw other people in serious trouble on television. Then, he says, "suddenly, we were moving."

He and his wife headed to a friend's house in Westlake, several miles away, thinking this would provide safe haven.

Now, Berman says, the Westlake area is being threatened and he may have to leave with his friends for another place.

The entertainer doesn't know if the fire has reached his house, which he's lived in since 1984. He grabbed a few items, including rare books on Shakespeare's plays.

He says the evacuation went smoothly in his neighborhood.

In his words, "It was a beautiful thing."
