Elderly Woman Crashes Through Post Office

Thursday, October 20, 2005

A 78-year-old woman sideswiped the fence of a daycare center and crashed her car through the wall of a post office Thursday, injuring three people.

The woman had just dropped off mail and was trying to make a U-turn in the parking lot when she stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake, police Sgt. Emil Kokesh said.

The car crumpled part of the fence of a Head Start Center, but no children were injured. It then barreled into the post office's personnel room, striking two postal employees and another man. One of the postal employees was pinned under the vehicle. He was taken to the hospital for moderate injuries to his legs, Kokesh said.

A female employee and the other man sustained minor cuts and bruises.

The driver, whose name was not released, was not injured. Officers did not detain her, he said.

"They conducted the investigation and found it was just an accident," he said. But the woman must call or report to the Department of Motor Vehicles for a driving test within five days or her license will be suspended.
