SANTA ANA -- A 12-year-old girl made up a story about being raped last Friday in a bathroom at Gordon H. Beatty Elementary School, Buena Park police announced Monday.
The girl gave police a detailed description of the supposed suspect -- saying he was a white man with short blond hair, a silver tooth and an inch- long scar on his cheek -- but has since admitted that she made up the story, said Sgt. Gary Worrall.
It was unclear why the girl lied or what, if any, repercussions there might be for leading police astray and prompting a massive search.
The reported attack prompted school officials to lock down the campus at 8201 Country Club Drive for several hours on Friday while police searched the area.
Over the weekend, volunteers passed out fliers around the school bearing a composite sketch of the suspect.
