Mammoth Mountain -- Three ski patrol members died at the Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort while trying to cordon off a potentially dangerous area.
Mammoth Mountain officials say at approximately 11:29, four Mammoth Mountain ski patrollers were inspecting the mountain after recent heavy snowstorms. The patrollers were fencing off a natural hazard, a deep gas vent, when the snow around the vent collapsed and the patrollers fell 21 feet into the opening.
Other members of the Mammoth Mountain ski patrol responded to the scene.
Three of the patrollers died as a result of the accident, one other ski patrol member was hospitalized.
Mammoth has received a record amount of snowfall this season.
