Deputies and Inmates Injured After Riots Break Out

Wednesday, May 03, 2006

There's been another outbreak of violence inside the Los Angeles County jail system.

A sheriff department sergeant says several dozen inmates began rioting at the Men's Central Jail in downtown L.A. at about 10 last night.

Four deputies and as many as four inmates are reported to have been hurt. The injuries reportedly range from minor to moderate. Seven ambulances were seen leaving the jail.

Deputies fired pepper-ball guns, and used other weapons, to restore order.

No word yet on why the riots broke out, but investigators are looking into what sparked the violence.

Disturbances at L.A. County jails have left at least two inmates dead and dozens injured in recent months. The violence has consisted largely of fighting between black and Latino inmates.
