Autistic Boy Struck by Car After Wandering on to Freeway

Wednesday, September 06, 2006

A 9-year-old autistic boy who wandered onto a freeway onramp was struck by a vehicle Wednesday morning, police said.

The accident on the Garvey Avenue onramp to the 10 Freeway occurred about 1:45 a.m., said El Monte police Sgt. Tim Siedentopp.

Police had just left the boy's house, where his parents had reported him missing, when they got a report of a pedestrian struck, Siedentopp said.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the boy stopped and apparently called authorities, Siedentopp said.

The boy was taken to a hospital to be treated for a broken arm and a cut on his head.

Autism is a developmental disorder characterized variously by problems communicating, seeing and hearing, or repetitive behaviors.
