CARSON, Mar. 22, 2007 (KABC) (KABC) -- Teachers and parents from Del Amo Elementary School in Carson held a town hall meeting Thursday to discuss air quality at the school, which is near chemical plants and refineries.
Students frequently complain of headaches and stomach pains, caused by the polluted air, teachers said.
"We've got a nurse one day a week and we just need a full-time nurse. Kids are always having bloody noses, always having stomach aches, always having headaches," teacher Teri Bryan told ABC7.
Davina Marino said she has seen the effect the poor air quality has had on her son.
"He's had frequent bloody noses and breathing problems as well," Marino told the station.
In January, the Los Angeles Unified School District and South Coast Air Quality Management District installed monitors around the school as part of an 18-month study to determine what toxins are in the air.
"We are working with the local, state and federal agencies to figure out what exactly is creating these problems, not only at Del Amo but the surrounding community," said school district spokeswoman Nadia Gonzalez.
"We understand the concern, that's why the district is working with those agencies to determine who the culprit is."
The school district is hosting a meeting at Del Amo Friday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. to discuss the concerns of teachers and parents. Representatives from Carson, AQMD and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health are expected to attend.
