LOS ANGELES, Sept. 1, 2007 (none) -- Two people were killed on Los Angeles county highways during the first 12 hours of this year's Labor Day three-day weekend, the California Highway Patrol reported Saturday.
The reporting period began at 6 p.m. Friday and concluded at 6 a.m Saturday. During that same reporting period last year, there were no traffic- related deaths.
One fatality occurred Friday night on the southbound Golden State (5) Freeway in Santa Clarita. Local CHP officials said the statistics are kept in Sacramento and they did not know where the second L.A. County death happened.
During this year's reporting period there were nine deaths statewide. Last year there were none.
In Los Angeles County CHP officers arrested 95 motorists on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, down from last year's total of 112. Statewide, there were 406, down from last year's total of 505.
