LONG BEACH, Sept. 14, 2007 (KABC-TV) (KABC) -- People in Long Beach are being told to cut back on their water use as city officials say a shortage is imminent.
Residents are being asked to take shorter showers, and to stop over-watering their lawns, which the city says wastes water.
The water department is also telling restaurant owners to stop giving drinking water to customers unless they ask for it.
"Our approach is better act now, because once you waste that water whether it goes down the drain or down the gutter you can't get it back," says Kevin Wittier, Long Beach Water Department.
Officials say water imported from Northern California and the Colorado River could be cut back as early as next year, if the dry weather continues.
