New traffic signals at 210 interchanges

Monday, March 10, 2008

Traffic signals at two interchanges along the 210 Freeway began operating Monday.

The commute was anything but smooth sailing for drivers connecting from the northbound 57 to the westbound 210 Monday morning.

The new interchange traffic signal which is suppose to improve the flow of traffic instead brought it to a screeching halt between 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

Air 7 showed traffic backed up for miles on the first day that the signal started operating.

Caltrans says that they were making adjustments to the metering system at that time and that is what caused the long delay.

"It is going to be worse and I do not think it is going to work," said a commuter.

Caltrans says to give the system time and eventually the new freeway connector signals will speed up the commute along the 210 corridor.

Even if you have to stop getting onto the freeway, they say that you will make up the time and get to your destination quicker.

"I do not think so. It is going to cause more traffic. It is not going to speed things up at all," said Herber Camey, a commuter.

"Especially at the entrance right here because it is a big loop. So I think it is going to be even worse," said Christian Lopez, a commuter.

At 5:00 a.m. the lights were also started operating at the northbound 605 to the westbound 210.

Two flashing beacon signs warn motorists that the meter is on and to prepare to slow down before reaching the signals.

Starting in May, more meters in other locations along the 210 will be turned on.

The goal of the project is to reduce overall congestion.
