Pothole milestone: Mayor repairs 800,000

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Los Angeles has reached a pothole milestone -- Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa repaired pothole number 800,000 on Monday.

The city does not know how many potholes there are left to repair. An employee of the Bureau of Street Services compared potholes to diamonds, saying that they are forever.

When Mayor Villaraigosa took office he pledged to be the pothole king of Los Angeles. Villaraigosa was on hand Monday to repair pothole number 800,000 at the corner of Wadsworth Ave. and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

The mayor says that the city is on track to fix 1 million potholes by the end of the year.

The City of Los Angeles has 6,500 miles of streets which is bigger than any other major city. Potholes are an ongoing problem. Despite budget cuts in other areas the mayor say Operation Pothole will not be affected.

'When it comes to filling potholes in the City of Los Angeles we are not going to hit the breaks. By the end of the year we are going to fill one-million potholes here in the City of Los Angeles," said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

To keep that commitment the city is urging residents to call in a pothole. Residents can call 311, which is the city's hotline. They guarantee that they will fill that pothole within 24 hours from the time that the call is made.
