New L.A. street lights cause controversy

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and other city officials announced on Tuesday morning that 100 new street lights will be installed as part of the safer city initiative.

However, the announcement was greeted by protesters demanding the city get permanent housing for the poor.

Villaraigosa said that making improvements doesn't mean the city isn't trying to do assist the poor with housing.

"We're absolutely committed to investing in housing and services but also to insure that people are safe in these neighborhoods, and obviously some people take umbrage with that but we're going to continue ahead, thank you," Villaraigosa said.

The mayor also said that over the last two and a half years, more than $100 million has been invested in permanent support of housing for the homeless.
