State water officials want to prevent a water crisis and are urging residents to conserve water.

The Department of Water and Power says the Eastern Sierra Snowpack, which provides half the city's water supply, is near normal. But officials say residents should still conserve water.

The DWP recently persuaded the City Council to raise water rates an average of $12 a year to repair aging infrastructure. The agency says single family homes in the city have already cut back water usage five-percent.

Reducing usage 10-percent more would lower bills $34. That would wipe out the rate hike and save $22 a year.
