Samoan festival ends in deadly shooting

Thursday, August 07, 2008

A gunfight between rival gangs at a Carson festival ended with one man dead and three others injured, police said.

Dozens had gathered at Victoria County Park for a Samoan Flag Day festival when shots were fired just after 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Investigators said one of the suspects fired into the crowd. Three bystanders were wounded, including a 10-year-old boy. The other two were a man and a woman. Their injuries were reported as not life threatening.

A security guard exchanged gunfire with one of the suspects, killing him.

According to family members, that person was 21-year-old Daniel Lotaki. His father insists that his son was not involved in gangs. He also said Daniel had gone to the festival with his sister, who witnessed the shooting.

"She say she see the whole thing. Security shoot him in the back, and he fall down on the ground and they shoot him right on the neck," said MacArthur Lotaki.

No one has been arrested.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department at (323) 890-5500.
