Starting Sat., dial '1' before area code

  

SAN FERNANDO VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- It's time to start practicing for the area code change in the San Fernando Valley.

Starting Saturday, phone companies want you to dial the digit "1" plus the area code. The goal is get people used to a new area code - 747 - which is set to hit the old 818 territory in May 2009.

Officials say the 747 area code was essential because of the growing population, but some residents are upset, saying the valley is defined by its 818 area code.
