'Significant' increase in knockoffs

Friday, October 10, 2008

Custom agents are reporting a significant increase in the attempts to smuggle counterfeit goods at the L.A. and Long Beach ports.

So far this year, customs agents have stopped more than 350 illegal shipments worth more than $71 million. Agents found illegally imported electrical products, food that had not been inspected and knockoff handbags and shoes.

Counterfeit products cost American business at least $200 billion a year, and could be responsible for the loss of 750,000 U.S. jobs.
