NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (KABC) -- A salmonella outbreak at local preschools has been traced to a North Hollywood charity.
Health officials say it started at a kitchen run by Volunteers of America Greater L.A. and spread through 28 Head Start programs in the San Fernando Valley and East Los Angeles.
There have been 32 confirmed cases of salmonella poisoning, and at least 10 children and five adults were hospitalized.
The charity was ordered to throw out all food and wash down its facility with bleach and water.
Bob Pratt, president of Volunteers of America Greater Los Angeles, said Thursday the problem is under control and operations have resumed at the charity's North Hollywood kitchen. The charity, which provides meals for several Headstart programs, began getting reports of salmonella on Oct. 15 from preschools in the San Fernando Valley and East Los Angeles.
County health director Jonathan Fielding says the cause of the salmonella is under investigation.
