Father Dollar hands out thousands to needy

Thursday, November 27, 2008

Reverend Maurice Chase, also known as "Father Dollar," passed out thousands of dollars to poor and homeless people on Skid Row in downtown L.A.

This year the reverend gave out $15,000. He handed out mostly one-dollar bills, but 10 people who were in wheelchairs received a $100 bill.

"Well first it's going to get me a bus to have dinner, and then after that I'll be getting in place and getting a job, and all that. I've only been down here a short time," said recipient Sherman Voorhies.

He gets the money from donations. The annual tradition is supported by the widows of Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra, along with comedian Bob Newhart and philanthropist Eli Broad.
