Sewage spill forces beach closures

LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- All of the city beaches in Long Beach are closed Sunday because of a raw sewage spill.

A city spokesperson says 22,000 gallons of sewage spilled out of a manhole cover in South Pasadena on Saturday. The waste seeped into a storm system that empties into the Los Angeles River and the ocean.

The spill may have been caused by a grease plug in the line.

Officials closed the beaches to protect swimmers from potentially contracting illnesses from the untreated sewage.

The beaches will remain closed until water samples come back clean.
