Girl, 2, attacked by cocker spaniel

Tuesday, March 17, 2009

A 2-year-old Long Beach girl is hospitalized after being attacked by the family cocker spaniel on Monday.

Long Beach Fire Department paramedics went to the home at 1850 Gardenia Avenue at about 11:30 p.m. after a girl was bitten on the face and suffered lacerations.

Long Beach Animal Control also went to the home to take the family pet into custody.

The usual procedure calls for the animal to be held for 10 days to see if there are signs of rabies. If there are no signs of rabies, the dog could be returned to its owner.

But Animal Control officials said the mother was "pretty upset" and did not request to have the dog returned.

It's still not known what prompted the attack.
