Downey kids get living Civil War lesson

Friday, April 03, 2009

Some Downey middle school students got a living lesson in history on Friday.

A Civil War reenactment was held at West Middle School. It was a chance to give students a taste of what it was like to be a soldier during the Civil War.

They saw what a Civil War camp was like and a got lesson in carrying period weapons.

"You can read this in books, but you really can't understand how the Civil War soldier lived, or why they died for the cause. So we're here to bring history alive for them," said Gary Iverson, American Civil War Society.

In addition to the military history, students received valuable lessons about what life was like for the North and South during the Civil War.
