LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- For many high school students, being openly gay can be a long walk down a lonely hallway. But for Sergio Garcia, it helped him earn a title high school students dream about: Prom queen.
The high school senior was one of 10 students seeking the tiara, and as would be expected the other nine were all female.

Garcia didn't let that faze him.
"It suits my personality the most, you know. Deep down inside I feel like I am obviously very feminine. I feel like it was something that was meant for me. Like I'm a queen," Garcia said.
Garcia's decision to run for prom queen may shock some people, but not at Fairfax High School.
In fact Principal Ed Zubiate says this school is so diverse that when Garcia said he wanted to be prom queen, no one batted an eye.
"He won, simple as that. And I know I have a number of parents tell me that they feel the diversity that their kids find here is one of the great lessons this school has to offer," Zubiate said.
TV cameras followed Garcia around, and the school staff fielded calls from as far away as Canada and France for the story about the male prom queen.
The reaction among Fairfax students was a bit mixed.
"Some don't like it because they say that it was better for a girl to win. But it's OK for a guy," said student Maribel Montano.
But feelings of tolerance and acceptance at Fairfax High School have proved to be a winning combination for Garcia.
