Hunger strike against LAUSD cuts ends Cortines proposes deeper LAUSD cuts

The hunger strike is over on Thursday for some Los Angeles Unified School District teachers.

The teachers were fasting as part of a bigger group protesting budget cuts and layoffs.

A few of the teachers have been on the hunger strike since the end of May, but on Thursday, they said it's time to refocus their efforts.

"It marks the beginning of a different campaign, to get the cuts back to normal, and get the teachers back in the classroom," said community activist Martin Terrones.

The teachers' new effort is aimed at recalling school board members.

LAUSD Board Superintendent Ramon Cortines said the district is forced to lay off teachers and make budget cuts because of the economy.
