Man arrested after 4-year-old shot

LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- A suspect has been arrested in the shooting of a 4-year-old boy in Long Beach. The boy was hit by a stray bullet on Wednesday during an argument between two men.

Long Beach police said it was the public's help that identified the suspect and authorities in Texas helped track him down quickly.

James Leland Landrum Sr., 46, was arrested Friday in El Paso, Texas.

"Texas law enforcement officials received information regarding the crime through a nationwide "be on the lookout" teletype. From that information, a traffic stop was conducted, and the suspect, Landrum, was taken into custody without incident," said Deputy Chief Robert Luna from the Long Beach Police Department.

Authorities said Landrum opened fire on a crowd, the bullet missing its mark and hitting 4-year-old Josue Hercules in the head as he played in the yard.

The violence had erupted on the 2100 block of Earl Avenue at about 7 p.m. when Landrum got into an argument with a group of men, according to police.

The boy is now in stable condition. His family said he is expected to make a full recovery.

Authorities are working on extraditing Landrum from Texas to California. He is expected to be charged with five counts of attempted murder.
