The flames burned dangerously close to a neighborhood in the Glenoaks Canyon area. At one point, residents of about 25 homes were asked to voluntarily evacuate when the fire crept within 200 yards.
About 300 firefighters were on the scene and at least five helicopters were making water-dropping runs.
No homes were damaged by the fire, and no one was injured.
The entrance to the Glendale freeway off the westbound 134 is closed until further notice.
Fire started near the 134 Freeway in Eagle Rock then raced up the hillside above a neighborhood in Glendale. The fire was upgraded to a second alarm at 4:45 p.m.
