LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- One hundred fifty young people took a solemn pledge to serve the city of Los Angeles.
They gathered Wednesday at the steps of City Hall where Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa administered the oath.
These men and women are among 1,500 City Year corps members nationwide who collectively will serve more than 2.5 million hours of service to their communities.
The 150 corps members pledging to serve Los Angeles will mentor and tutor more than 1,500 children in partnership with local schools.
Officials say the corps members are dedicated to helping at-risk youth by giving them the necessary tools to succeed in school and life.
"Our corps members will meet the challenge of getting children on track to succeed and graduate in 12 schools across Los Angeles from Boyle Heights to Watts," said Allison Graff-Weisner, City Year Los Angeles Executive Director.
City Year's work in Los Angeles is made possible due to a grant of $1 million from the Entertainment Industry Foundation, which is Hollywood's leading charity and City Year's Los Angeles' impact sponsor.
So far, 12,500 City Year alumni have served more than 20 million hours of service since 1988.
