Pasadena's Bungalow Heaven honored

Wednesday, October 07, 2009

Pasadena's historic Bungalow Heaven community has received a new honor. It's been designated as one of America's Ten Great Neighborhoods.

The honor comes from the American Planning Association's Great Places in America program.

Bungalow Heaven is a six by six block area in Pasadena bordered by Washington Boulevard, Mentor Avenue, Orange Grove Boulevard and Holliston Avenue.

The American Planning Association singled out Bungalow Heaven because it has a large number of significantly important historic homes, and the residents and the city work together to restore, protect and maintain the area's unique character.

"Bungalow Heaven demonstrates how historic neighborhoods have an enduring appeal especially in a city like Pasadena, where there is a strong commitment to historic preservation and to the early 20th century Arts and Crafts movement," said Pasadena Vice Mayor Victor Gordo. "Residents throughout Pasadena have invested years and years of work to protect their neighborhoods, and it is a testament to those first dedicated residents of Bungalow Heaven."

"Bungalow Heaven is truly remarkable in that there are more than a thousand historic homes in the neighborhood," said APA Chief Executive Officer Paul Farmer, FAICP. "Residents and the city are rightfully proud of this architectural legacy, and we applaud them for their on-going commitment through planning and planning follow-through to protect and enhance their neighborhood's unique sense of place."

Most of the homes in Bungalow Heaven were built between 1905 and 1920. Many are single family houses from the Arts and Crafts period.

There are also Queen Anne, Gothic, Spanish, Colonial and English Revival homes in the neighborhood.

Residents joined forces to preserve their neighborhood in 1985 after one home was replaced with a stucco apartment building.

They persuaded the city council to designate Bungalow Heaven Pasadena's first landmark district.

Bungalow Heaven was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.
